John Digby QC practices predominantly in the area of Commercial Law, with specialty in International Arbitration and Superior Court cases, often involving disputes concerning Contract, Trade Practices Act,Engineering, Construction, Commercial Arbitration, Off-shore Hydrocarbon and Petroleum extraction and Information and Communications Technology.  He also practices in the areas of Expert Determination and substantial commercial Mediation.

Since 2002 he has been a Senior Fellow and lecturer at Melbourne University in the post-graduate International Construction Law course which addresses the state of International Arbitration Law, and  Engineering and Construction Law in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore and which has a heavy emphasis on the law and practise of International Arbitration.

Called to the Bar in 1979 and taking silk in Victoria in 1993, John Digby was Chairman of the Victorian Bar Council in 2008-2009.  He is currently President of the Commercial Bar Association of Victoria.

  • Senior Counsel in off-shore hydrocarbon extraction ICC International Arbitration concerning the Montara Field in the Timor Sea and related FPSO issues.
  • Senior Counsel in Australian enforcement related proceedings concerning Mongolian International Arbitration.
  • Senior Counsel in Australian High Court Appeals and High Court Special Leave Applications
  • Senior Counsel in relation to claims concerning the Melbourne City Link Project. Non-Binding Expert in relation to disputes concerning the City Link Project.
  • Senior Counsel in relation to claims concerning Melbourne East Link Project.
  • Senior Counsel in relation to Claims exceeding $600M relating to the design and implementation of a global banking computer services system.
  • Negligence claims involving eight Defendant corporations concerning pollution by dry cleaning industry operations.
  • Complex issues of contract construction, technical engineering evidence and damages questions concerning a large infrastructure project comprising multiple  water treatment plants.
  • Design and construct contract for a highway, concerned principally with complex contract construction and planning and environment issues.
  • Cogeneration Arbitrations - complex multi-party dispute involving questions relating to the performance of aircraft turbine engines and cogeneration economic loss claims.
  • Dispute over construction of multi-storey office building, involving complex time extension issues.
