Jeffery Gleeson SC

Jeff Gleeson joined the Victorian Bar in 1992. He took silk in 2007. He practices extensively in the TEC area. Jeff combines an enthusiasm for the detail with a skill for organizing and leading a large team.

Jeff graduated from Melbourne University in 1987, completed articles with Maddock Lonie and Chisholm (now Maddocks) before working as a solicitor with Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

Jeff has had considerable experience with court proceedings in relation to TEC matters, as well as large domestic and international arbitrations, including having been briefed in the following matters:

  • junior counsel to Mrs. S. Crennan QC (now of the High Court of Australia) in a commercial arbitration in relation to cogeneration plants.  The amount in dispute was in excess of AUD$50m and the hearing proceeded for approximately 3 months before resolution;
  • Victorian Supreme Court proceedings involving Multiplex Constructions Pty. Ltd., and the Victorian State Government.  The issues involved in the proceedings included delay, extensions of time and prolongation issues.
  • proceedings in the Supreme Court of Queensland concerning the construction of an ammonium nitrate plant.
  • appeared as lead counsel for the Respondent before an arbitral panel of 3 in an ICC international arbitration. The issues involved design deficiencies of a hydro-electric facilities in the Philippines. The amount in dispute was over AUD$100m. Overall responsibility (with the assistance of two junior counsel) for the presentation of the Respondent’s case over a three year period.  The arbitration was divided into 4 main hearings over approximately 2 years.  Also involved, with senior counsel from Singapore, in appeal proceedings in Singapore.
  • Victorian Supreme Court proceedings concerning the Legionella outbreak at Melbourne Aquarium.  The proceedings involved issues of design and construction.
  • in 2008 (and continuing) briefed as lead senior counsel in a London Court of International Arbitration arbitration.  The dispute involves issues of design, construction, delay and prolongation and the amounts claimed exceed AU$100m.
